Facebook Inc, now called Meta, announced its dating application, Facebook Dating, in May 2018. There was real excitement, with people expecting a revolutionary dating app that would soon beat Tinder. Most single people say they don’t feel a lot of pressure to find a partner from their friends, family or society in general. About two-in-ten (22%) say they feel at least some pressure from friends, while 31% say the same about family members and 37% say they feel society is pressuring them. Partnered adults are those who say they are currently married, living with a partner or in a committed romantic relationship.
And LGB adults are far more likely to have first met their partner online than straight adults (28% vs. 11%). Feeling pressure to be in a committed relationship is highly dependent on age. For example, 53% of single 18- to 29-year-olds say there is at least some pressure from society to find a partner, compared with 42% of 30- to 49-year-olds, 32% of 50- to 64-year-olds and 21% of those ages 65 and older. In fact, a majority of singles 65 and older – the vast majority of whom are widowed or divorced, in contrast to young singles who are mostly never married – say they feel no pressure at all from each of these sources.

Psychologist Lindsay Shaw Taylor found that even though people said they would be willing to date someone of a different race, that people tend to choose dates similar to themselves. People can meet other people on their own or the get-together can be arranged by someone else. Matchmaking is an art based entirely on hunches, since it is impossible to predict with certainty whether two people will like each other or not. “All you should ever try and do is make two people be in the same room at the same time,” advised matchmaker Sarah Beeny in 2009, and the only rule is to make sure the people involved want to be set up.

Given the widespread adoption of dating sites and apps, we wanted to learn how people feel about them. To get answers, we asked more than 4,000 adults—out of the more than 3 million people who take surveys on SurveyMonkey every day—about their perception and use of these services. Nearly a quarter of people have used or are currently using online dating services. For young and middle aged adults (18-44 years old), this number increases to a third.

After controversies such as the 2015 hacking of Ashley Madison user data, dating sites must work to convince users that they are safe places with quality members. The longest running and most successful early computer dating business, both in terms of numbers of users and in terms of profits, was Dateline, which was started in the UK in 1965 by John Patterson. He was charged with fraud on several occasions for selling lists of the women who signed up for his service to men who were looking for prostitutes. Dateline existed until Patterson’s death from alcoholism in 1997, and during the early 1990s it was reported to be the most profitable computer dating company in the world. Among online dating platforms, Tinder has the highest percentage (51%) of paying customers.
The older users were, the more likely they were to use their online dating accounts in the evening. Additionally, the younger users were, the more likely they were to use their online dating accounts in the afternoon. Men were far more likely to use 3 or more dating apps at one time than women. Over 74% of people admit to checking their online dating accounts while at work. This includes 34.13% who say they check them regularly and 39.88% who say yes they check them but only rarely.
